Why use medical illustration?

Aquaporin Illustration

Medical illustration and animation are wonderful tools for helping you share complex medical concepts in a clear and engaging way. They help your company or practice transform those tricky medical concepts into something everyone can understand and connect with. Here’s how we love to help:

  • We create stunning, accurate medical illustrations and animations that make your patient education materials, advertising, and website shine. Complex information becomes engaging and memorable!
  • Got something invisible to the naked eye? No problem! We specialize in making the unseen visible, turning abstract concepts into clear, compelling visuals that stick with people.
  • We craft editorial illustrations that turn those head-scratching scientific ideas into “aha!” moments. Complex becomes simple, confusing becomes clear.
  • Working with prototypes or products still in development? We’re your creative partners, bringing tomorrow’s innovations to life today through detailed, accurate illustrations.

What is unique about medical illustration?

What makes medical illustrators special? We’re part scientist, part artist, and part detective! We need a solid understanding of science combined with creative vision because we’re often asked to show what can’t actually be seen.

Here’s a perfect example: imagine a surgical photograph that shows the procedure, but it can’t capture those important subtle details the surgeon really wants to highlight. That’s where we come in. A skilled medical illustrator can work magic by choosing just the right angle, strategically highlighting key anatomy, or carefully obscuring distracting elements to focus attention exactly where it needs to be.

We’re essentially visual storytellers who translate the invisible into the unforgettable!

What training do medical illustrators receive?

Medical illustrators typically hold master’s degrees from specialized accredited programs. In North America, there are only five accredited graduate schools for medical illustration, each admitting between 3 to 12 students annually – making it quite competitive.

The Association of Medical Illustrators maintains a comprehensive list of these accredited programs. During our master’s studies, we take graduate-level science courses including anatomy and cell biology, along with specialized courses unique to medical illustration, such as surgical illustration. It’s an intensive program that perfectly blends rigorous science with creative artistry.
