The anterior and posterior pituitary are not the front and back of the same gland. They are from distinctly different embryologic origins and are not continuous. The posterior pituitary is hypothalamic tissue. The anterior pituitary is its own tissue. It is derived from oropharynx ectoderm and grows up into the sphenoid bone.
