Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease marked by progressive articular cartilage breakdown. As cartilage deteriorates, subchondral bones lose their protective barrier, causing bone-on-bone contact that produces pain, inflammation, and reduced mobility.

The knee’s weight-bearing function and repetitive loading make it highly susceptible to osteoarthritic changes. The condition follows a chronic, progressive course with variable rates of deterioration.
